AASHTO’s NCHRP08-36, Task 98 is a new guidebook that details three data sources useful for transportation planning or researching travel behavior: the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW), Quality Workforce Indicators (QWI), and OnTheMap (OTM). The last two sources are derived from the Census Bureau’s Longitudinal Employment Household Dynamics Program (LEHD), and the QCEW is collected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
Each data source provides unique information that can be used for planning or policy analysis. The QCEW, for example, includes data on all firms that abide by state and federal unemployment insurance laws and have paid employees. The QWI goes even further by including data on labor force changes during each quarter (i.e. new hires, layoffs, monthly earning changes). Finally, OnTheMap is more worker-focused in that it contains information on socio-demographic and industry-related characteristics of where employees live and work, respectively.
